When it comes to social justice, often the stand alone events get a great deal of attention, while the “slow burn” issues simmer quietly in the back. When it comes to creating a world where all people are treated equally, we face a ‘slow burn’ issue when it comes to women’s rights. The difference in the way that women and men are treated are subtle and hard to pinpoint. Social justice groups aim to improve the lives of women by changing the statistics related to violence against women, and empowering women to have strong voices within homes, communities and the country as a whole.
When it comes to empowering women, groups like “Girls Rock Vermont” are on the right track. This non-profit organization, with headquarters in Burlington, Vermont, is on a mission to give girls the self confidence that comes along with creative self expression.
For several sessions each summer, the nonprofit organizes a girl’s camp where female musician mentors train girls how to rock like stars. The classes are built around song writing, playing with a band, and solo sessions. In a safe environment, girls see other women expressing themselves musically, and then find the courage to do this themselves.
The Girls Rock Vermont mission is to empower the next generation of female musicians, and to start girls out on a journey of creativity that can last a life time. As movements like Girls Rock Vermont start up all over the US, and in other progressive countries, women around the globe can hope to enjoy a future that is base on equality as a foundation. We are becoming a global society, and technology allows us to share like never before. Though women around the world face many challenges when it comes to social justice, groups like Girls Rock are sure to make a difference, one girl at a time.
Social justice organizations like girls rock rely on donations from people who are passionate about the cause. This is true of many nonprofits that advocate for change, and it presents the public with a great way to vote, in a sense, with their wallets, by supporting the organizations that align with their values.
This is what Mike Lacey and Jim Larkin do with their fund, the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund. This fund donates to the organizations that align with Lacey and Larkin’s values. In this way, two individuals are able to have a very large impact.
The fund was started when Mike Lacey and Jim Larkin were arrested and thrown in jail, but subsequently got out due to national attention and outrage. The two were jailed for writing that they had shown in the local news paper, and this was clearly unconstitutional. With their large settlement, the two launched the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund.
This money goes towards organizations that give voice to those who might otherwise not have a voice. Advocating for equality and fair treatment of all takes energy, organization, and resources. Money is one tool that can be used to support groups that effect change.
